The CAPI VP28-Platinum is hand built and tested by CAPI in Nashville, TN.
The mic audio path is very much similar to the popular kit VP28. The main changes are Platinum exclusive CA2618 1:8 input transformers and Platinum exclusive CA2623-Pt Litz wire output transformers. In addition, Scott Liebers has created a ground up exclusive Platinum Super Dot opamp. Scott has referred to the Super Dot as his best sounding opamp yet!
A FET Direct Inject has been added to the front panel of all Platinum preamps. The front panel jack is auto switching so inserting a 1/4" plug automatically activates DI mode. In a quest to create a very good utility DI, it seems as though CAPI has created a great one! Its their own ground up circuit that goes thru the input transformer for some extra harmonic love.
Like its kit counterpart, the VP28-Pt is a true 2-stage mic/line amplifier. The 2nd stage fader booster has 12dB of gain 'in hand', exactly like a real console. This allows for many different gain combinations. You can crank the fader and reduce the preamp gain or in contrast, attenuate the 2nd stage and crank the preamp gain for some sweet, additional harmonic content. User tip; do not engage the mic pad when tracking drums. Turn the Preamp Gain fully CCW, the channel fader to -12dB and enjoy.
The VP28-Platinum has a buffered two pole (-12dB) 80Hz High Pass Filter. It also has a selectable input impedance of 1k or 3k. 3k can be very useful for ribbon mics or just a great tonal option for any other microphone.
The VP28-Platinum includes these great features: -In MIC mode, the stepped PREAMP GAIN ranges from +25.2dB to +60.1dB. -In LINE mode (MIC pushbutton out or disengaged), the stepped PREAMP GAIN ranges from -11dB to +23.9dB, with an input impedance of 9K ohms. -The PAD pushbutton equates to 18dB of attenuation in either MIC or LINE mode. -The stepped CHANNEL FADER switch and 2nd stage booster amp provide a range of -16dB to +12dB in addition to the above-mentioned preamp gain ranges. This equates to a maximum gain of 72.1dB when in MIC mode. -In LINE mode with unity gain settings, the VP28-Pt's clipping level is +27dBu. -Accurate metering of the final output signal is achieved using LM339 quad comparators in a 'console' style configuration. -Physically and electronically fully VPR compliant with current draw less than 102mA per rail (under typical operating conditions)
Trace Audio proudly builds all products in the CAPI DIY line and are excited to now offer the VP28-Platinum in our line up. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and ask questions.
